at UIUC, there's a project in the systems class (CS241) that is exactly this. there's a leaderboard with projects and how it compares to the system malloc for a variety of metrics this is definitely one of the best projects i ever

It is EXTREMELY difficult to get money into BTC-E. You have to go through multiple currency exchangers which each take a cut of the action. It takes a lot of time and is annoying as hell.
