That OSS has become too entangled with political activism and ideological gatekeeping, when it should be about making great software, giving people control over their computers, and rediscovering the joy of computing.
I don't think Omarchy is anti-political so much as an attempt to revive the enthusiast/hacker ethos of the OSS community.

- thesdev 22d agoNot sure ignore is the right word here. I think they rather take pride in it.

- meibo 22d agoThe fact that this is up for debate already says all. For anyone passing through, read the blog posts and his social media feeds, make up your own mind.
- rbanffy 22d agoRacists don't think racist speech is racism. News at eleven.
- meibo 20d agoNot everyone passing through HN is a racist. These things become canon when nobody opposes them.

- preg_match 22d agoOkay but reading DHHs own tweets and blog posts is not fake news. You can’t just call anything you don’t like fake news. It would be one thing if people were putting words into DHH’s mouth. They’re not.

- throwawaypath 16d agoMy flagged comment: >The fact that this is up for debate already says all "The fact that Mamdani is an antisemite is up for debate already says all." Many people repeating fake news does not make it true.
- rbanffy 22d ago> He's not a "massive racist," Only in the sense he lacks physical mass.
- throwawaypath 22d ago>Only in the sense he lacks physical mass. He lacks physical mass, so he's virtual, made up, like the claims that he's racist.
- TehCorwiz 22d ago"Freedom to compute" cannot be separated from "Freedom to exist" as it explicitly depends on it. The authors of Omarchy pay lip service to the former while taking a stance against the latter.

- throwawaypath 22d agoNothing in that linked comment points to where DHH specifically takes a stand against the "freedom to exist."
- TehCorwiz 22d agoI disagree. Calling for ethnic cleansing counts to me as taking a stance against a group's right to existence.

- throwawaypath 22d agoHe didn't call for ethnic cleansing.
- stymaar 22d agoHe did. He claimed that the demographic has changed and he advocates for reverting this change. And it turns out that forcibly altering the demographic of an era is the literal definition of ethnic cleansing (and by the way the phrass has historicallt been coined with the specific meaning of removing Muslim people from Serbia, by the people who intended to perform that “cleansing”, so it's particularly apt here).

- Avshalom 22d ago'OSS "became" too entangled with political activism' Statements dreamed up by people who get gilliganed by a coconut every morning.
- thesuitonym 22d ago> Omarchy is...an attempt to revive the enthusiast/hacker ethos of the OSS community. ...By injecting it with big money and pushing more AI slop?
- ndiddy 22d agoMaybe DHH should live by his own ethos and "shut up and program" rather than continually making divisive political statements that alienate people who might otherwise use and contribute to his distro.
- throwawaypath 16d agoIs that not what he's doing? Where on any Omarchy page have you seen "divisive political statements that alienate people"?
- rbanffy 22d agoI don’t think he’ll refrain from using the political power he amassed by building a very popular web framework. We gave him a megaphone and a soapbox, and he’ll use it. We probably should have known better.
- stymaar 22d ago> That OSS has become too entangled with political activism Wait is that really the spin that DHH is pushing? That'd be insane given he's among the most politically active open sources developers put there by a wiiide margin.
- rbanffy 22d agoOh, but you see, when it’s their own points of view, it’s never politics.
