SQLite all over the place – it's great having a super portable DB format for quick little hits. There's nothing quite like sending a DB as an email attachment.

I can explain part of it: the hash based URLs are completely broken in Canada (and presumably elsewhere). Any link I follow (e.g. gawker.com/#12345) redirects to ca.gawker.com. The hashes aren't preserved on redirect, and I'm not interested

Are you asking about Apple "quality" aesthetics? Graphic design is about solving problems; aesthetics are secondary. Google's designs solve its problems--satisfying search results, simple access to email, etc--very effectively.

My design partner uses Illustrator for layout quite successfully. It doesn't handle pixel perfect layouts but gets us so close so quickly that it's well worth it. Out final stage involves editing the UI "sprites" in Photoshop for pixel perf
