Not really. Proof of stake offers a very energy efficient way to secure transactions. That is what Ethereum runs on.

In all fairness, there is more than just cost when choosing a provider. Elastic has had higher uptime than the AWS alternative. I had to switch off AWS Elasticsearch hosting because it kept going down.

It's an ElasticSearch endpoint that automatically comes with every index. I'm not even sure if there's a way to disable. Maybe some sort of auth.

We need new protocols. Blockchain protocols can somewhat solve the spam problem by charging to send. Receiving addresses can also whitelist or charge to receive.
