Yes, I can't remember seeing a bathroom or laundry here that didn't have a floor drain. Seems insane for that to not be standardised. I briefly lived with a bathroom in the UK that was carpeted?!

I never used that, but I like Rain Parrot in Australia. Not sure if it's similar. It will tell me that it's likely to rain in x minutes, then stop y minutes later, and it's almost always fairly accurate.

I agree. A simple and unremarkable person could once upon a time have their basic factory job (or similar), make enough to own their home, and have a decent unremarkable life with their family. I think the pressures of housing costs or rent

Not sure if it's different over there, but farming in Australia (whether with questionable water reliance or not) is considered sacrosanct and pushback would be a political risk. Any foreign-owned alfalfa exporters would just throw lob

My family has volunteered a few times to spend a day planting trees on farmland given over to conservation in Australia. It’s good fun and very sociable. There’d be organisations that do this in many countries.
