Really? A lot of the technologies in the opening paragraph are in relation. If you are building API-centric apps, you will have to have a well rounded understanding of how the technologies relate not just the mastery of each on their own.

At first glance I thought he meant it was the C++ of the web by popularity. This will probably be the typical pattern of widely used programming languages. Adding features until it is time to start from a clean slate a few decades later.
