I use a bird feeder with peanut butter for birds. Nothing falls to the ground below and it is relatively mouse safe if you hang it from a string. And the birds love it.

I find it a bit strange that they regard glass as a waste product which it is not. Furthermore, if the working component is silicon then you can just as well use sand instead of glass.
