In Chrome you can right click the address bar and select "Always show full URLs". I prefer how Firefox highlights the most important part and still shows the full URL.

Stories are implemented to keep the user engaged. I think the fact that people are even asking for them in other apps could be interpreted as clearly working or even as being addictive.

While this does still mean you have to trust your keyboard app, you can tell Signal to trigger your keyboards incognito mode. I don't think it should include its own keyboard. But this could be an extra app in general.

I'm curious why a CD would not work anymore after listening to it a lot? Is the laser powerful enough to damage it or is it the heat from the device itself which is degrading the material in the long term?

I think holding shift just works for autostart when booting up. Autorun/autoplay of CD's can be disabled in the system settings.
