Not to mention helps you solve some more advanced problems like tunneling and collision resolution with no extra effort. I think it was a very smart choice to use Box2D rather then rolling your own solution.

I can confirm this. When I went on interview at Google and asked various engineers what they did for their 20% time they all said they didn't have time for it.

It was a huge undertaking, that games complexity and features is much more advanced then TF2. This isn't something a few guys did on the side.

"We are what we do repeatedly." If you spend time thinking about best practices, it becomes easier and less time consuming. You need a balance of it early in your career but if you're constantly working at it, it'll become second nature.
