I have never understood why health ensurance is handled by the employer in the US, why don't people buy private health insurance instead? It feels insane to put yourself in that kind of dependency on your employer.

I find it easier to get work on a short notice. But that requires a stable economic situation. Personally I don't mind going without work for a month or two, I even like it. May be stressful for the first contract though.

Well, there are plenty of companies operating in for example Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki. Just like regular bicycles thre are more riders in the summer than in thr winter.
