Generally, people are not very good at determining if thoughtful design is worth the effort. Yes, waterfall was a mistake, but design-nothing is mistaken too. Thinking before doing helps avoid waste & rework.

I use tmux within my tiling window manager: it manages my terminal, and the WM manages windows. It works great for me, because this way I only have a single terminal to worry about.
