Effective Java by Joshua Bloch is fantastic for covering up to Java 9. There have been incremental updates since then but this book will get you 95% of the way, and it is very well written.

I'm using Fish with vim mode and something seems to have gone wrong, where the prompt displays the currently mode of vim (here [I] for insert) your terminal seems to interpret this as a command, so nothing works unless I delete the [I]
