I think you misunderstood the intentions here, the game was not supposed to be a demonstration of what is possible with HTML5. The author probably just wanted to show what he does to practice his programming skills.

My impression was that it had to do with the gamma correction of PNG images. The 4chan thumbnail generator seems to ignore the gamma correction while the browser does not.

They are just examples of things he disagrees with, and not meant as a comparison. But yes, there are probably better examples in this context. The point is that you don't have to support people you disagree with.
