I actually find refactoring legacy code to be one of the most challenging things I do at work. While I definitely wouldn't want to do that for all 40 hours of work I wouldn't classify refactoring as "remedial".

Yes! As a former Googler, Google has a terrible track record with hardware companies: Motorola, Nest, Dropcam, Boston Dynamics, etc. I don't see this as going anywhere.
