please don't do this to your synology leave it to serve files and iscsi. it's very good at it if you leave it alone, no extra software, it will basically be completely stable. it's really impressive

Weirdly, Windows Server is a better desktop experience. It does not ask you to play Candy Crush, for example.

Zyxel and Fast Networks are also good on the ISP side (Not sure Fast Networks is still a thing - website seems to be down - but I run one of their DSLAMs and am happy with it)

not really i so desperately want it to work, but it messes up often enough that it's not worth it yet fwiw, using local intellij with nfs mounted source is a better experience

I would try two things: (1) Running gigabit ethernet over the cat 5. Maybe it works? (2) Look at GFast. I run a GFast service in my apartment block. We have Cat 3 (yes, 3!) cable. We can do 500mbit. You would need to buy a DSLAM.

I hear qt is excellent, but would encourage you to do distinct ui code for each platform, in that platform's native ui libs. You'll look like a fish out of water otherwise.
