I love FreeDOS still exists! I used it ocassionally in past to load a new BIOS.exe to update a Dell Latitude laptop not having any Windows OS installed.

As you can read in the Rails 7 announcement, the webpacker is history already. Also, you don't even need to have the node present with ESM. So all this complex stuff you mention won't be soon required.

Thank you. That's not a small sum, though they probably have some internal tiers per number of requests so for lower traffic scenarios the monthly price might be more affordable.
