Traditional databases use complicated indexing and storage structures in part to minimize the need to examine unrelated data. hstore is better than plain text for JSON but a scheme closer to the existing PostgreSQL table/page/row

I'm a happy user of Tarsnap. Why should I consider this solution? Also (playing devil's advocate for a moment) what's the best reason you can give for me to just keep using Tarsnap?

Since you're on OSX I would recommend using Privoxy with Little Snitch (which is quite easy to toggle and tweak quickly).
