People who design these games think about security. Sometimes (rarely) exploits get unnoticed and go into production. I'm confused about why we are supposed to believe that there is anything exploitable about this particular card?

I fully agree with this. CSS set the web back years with it's inability to handle simple layout. The W3C organization is run by representatives of major corporations, and the standards take years to roll out.
