It could be an issue of imprecise wording. For instance, perhaps 59% of white parents had kids who moved up, while 43% of white parents had kids who moved down. This doesn't excuse the reporting, but it might explain it.

I question how useful a tool like this is for a skilled writer. Prose isn't code. Many key elements of good writing are based around the idea of knowing the rules, and then carefully breaking them .
