Thats a failure of an analogy. It would be a better analogy if it was a developer of TCP/IP and something bad happened to their website so to fix it they fucked with TCPIP to fix an application level issue.

Why would not just use a asymmetric crypto and just use the public key to encrypt files for automated back ups without needing a password? Seems like a lot of work to produce something with less security.

Consensys is constantly implementing lots of useless solutions for attention grabbing subjects to try to drive the price up on the cryptocurrency they hold a lot of. Almost all of their ideas do not actually work in the real world.
