That chimes with my experience. Back in 2009 my (then) 9 year old son made a few stop frame lego movies and we posted them on YouTube. Some of the comments were really mean. I remember being surprised by the response but found it quite amus

I don’t think it’s about ability or interest. It’s about presence. There’s loads of developers out there with a range of skills. I work with devs who are great who you’ve never heard of and others who aren’t so great who you’ve never heard

I think the point here is that your prof was criticising you rather than your output. That’s why it’s brutal, because it’s personal. He’s being honest about his feelings but it’s not very helpful to you. So I don’t think it’s fair.
