There are multiple "American publics". The outrage machine will not like it, you are correct, but take a drive through Nevada or West Virginia and you'll see folks used to such side effects.

Yep, this used to happen frequently on road trips. It relies on squeezing the wheel fairly firmly. I got into the habit of periodically giving it a good squeeze while resting my hand on it.
