7G? Man I hope not. I watched a fine documentary a few years ago about what happens when they try rolling 7G out... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_to_the_End_of_the_World

People seem to bounce off Phlebas as a first go at (M) Banks. Player of Games is the usual recommendation for a first Culture book.

> It was the day my grandmother exploded. Probably Banks's most memorable opening line. Love Crow Road... Have you seen the tv adaptation? I keep meaning to watch it.

China ruled Vietnam for a thousand years (111 BC–939 AD) so I'm sure there was some linguistic cross pollination. Though tomatoes come around long after that period...

Coffee going away was a sad time. I had a tradition of getting some from Center Camp in the wee hours of the morning on overnight volunteer shifts.

Smoking weed is iffy; lots of federal cops out here looking for it, since pot is still illegal on federal lands. Just chilling and doing your own thing is certainly doable.

I always get here early, before the event officially opens, in part to get an up close view of all the art and camps going up. (I'm still not used to easy internet access at BRC, he says as he browses HN from his camp)

Racket defines an evaluation order for function arguments (left to right).

It's ugly and probably fragile and prone to break, but I found a way. Added it as an answer on that Stack Overflow question: https://stackoverflow.com/a/79997503/9952196

It might take a custom #lang. I'll play around with it when I have some free time... That read-syntax doesn't just accept everything accepted by plain read is one of my biggest annoyances with Racket.

Yeah, there's a toggle for it in read-syntax mode. https://docs.racket-lang.org/reference/Reading.html#%28def._...

Are there any decent alternatives to reddit? When they finish killing off old reddit I'm gone, and will need a new time waster.

Guile keywords use the same #:foo syntax as Racket. The reader can also accept :foo or foo: notation. https://doc.guix.gnu.org/guile/latest/en/html_node/Keyword-R...

Interestingly, By the Waters of Babylon was written in 1937, before WW2 and the development of atomic and nuclear weapons - events that obviously and understandably triggered that theme in later writing like Bradbury's.

My college was a DEC shop; I learned programming and how to use unix in labs full of dumb X terminals connected to Alpha servers. Still have a lot of nostalgia for the architecture.

The old Cree bulbs that Home Depot used to carry have been great for me. I need to find a new supplier though because the brands they have now are junk that last a year or two if I'm lucky.
