People absolutely refuse to engage with this fact with even a modicum of substance.

Sure we can. I’m already convinced they solved it. You’re free to believe whatever you wish.

This is so wild to me. Would you really have rather been born in 1790 than 1990?

Haha, I disagree with every single statement you made! Wild how we can see it so differently. I think the ROI these big labs are seeing is incredible, I think their moats are increasing, I think their reasons for not IPOing yet have nothing

I didn't claim that's what they really want, I claimed that they've repeatedly said that's what they want. Their words and actions are perfectly consistent with each other if they believe they're locked in an arms

IMO knowledge work productivity has gone up a massive amount since 1990, and companies could in fact fire most of their knowledge workers while still getting their most critical work done. (These are the bullshit jobs/email jobs.) But

Aside from the fact that I don’t see how you can calculate a rate off two data points (without really wide error bars), I also don’t understand how fault doesn’t matter. If neither of these were Waymo’s fault, then Waymo has never caused a

Everyone knows that OpenAI and Anthropic cannot IPO in their current state or the economy's current state. What? Everyone doesn't know that. I predict one or both of them will IPO before the end of 2026.

It's genuinely hilarious to me that you immediately proved my second paragraph correct. Putting arms race in quotes doesn't make it any less real. It just means you wish it wasn't, but don't have any good evidence or arg

It's particularly funny that you posted this after literally 1000+ comments on this thread, many of whom are responding to this positively. This will sell great.

Are you new to HN? There is literally nothing that the users on this site won't bitch and moan about.

This is true, but does it change the game theory / arms race aspect of it?

Yes! We should do that right away, and I'm sure China will do the same. Right?

It's head-in-sand denial because actually facing the threat (and our total inability to stop it, imo) is terrifying, and people don't like feeling that. So they're just angry and cynical instead. Plus it makes them feel smart

They literally have never promised anything like that. They have explicitly said repeatedly that they want regulation, oversight, nationalization, a global slowdown, etc. And then I have to read page after page of cynical comments about how

People who work hard to build intuition and also use AI effectively will dominate the field. This will be literally every field, sooner or later, at least until the human and their intuition is just slowing the AI down. There’s no scenari

Seriously, it’s so fucking lame and boring to read these cynical takes. I might just make a HN comment that filters these people out, they’re ruining the site. To be clear, I don’t mind a well-reasoned negative take on something, but much o

I feel similarly, but I did get some stuff in Feb 2020 when I could tell that COVID was going to be a huge deal. Camp stove, water storage containers, bulk bags of dry beans and rice, and several buckets of freeze dried food that have a she

Paradoxically, the lower the fatalities get the bigger news it would be! "One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic" and all that.

Yeah, you should definitely do whatever you think is best, I just am extremely skeptical that anyone can stop this train. At best we might be able to slow it down a tiny bit, or push on it around the edges, but we've opened Pandora

This seems really short-sighted. Even putting aside the fact that there is no fundamental barrier to replacing physical human labor with robots in the coming decades, a sufficiently intelligent actor could easily gather the financial and po

The implication of this is quite horrifying. It means a paternalistic AI which is firmly in control. One with no off switch. One which can say "no" to Presidents and despots alike. One which can protect us from our worst citizens

Again, this misses the point. Why did he turn down an equity stake that likely would have been worth hundreds of billions? It's not like it would have jeopardized the power you're talking about.
