Quite literally subjectively, not objectively. Some % of communication is non-verbal. Tone, expression, gesture. If the author of this article struggles with direct communication, it's likely because they don't (or can't) pay

It's also probable that women who have no previous history don't know what their options are and will put up with abuse instead of opting for divorce. If you've already been able to escape abuse once, then it makes sense that
