I have always followed the same, but also found calendar events are a good carve out to this. The user doesn't care about the timezone change yesterday (and shouldn't..), they just need to see their meeting at 10am.

Null could imply the field was present and a value not entered or not necessary. Missing could imply the field was never known about at all. The context is important. Null != missing.

I've got a pre-CarPlay OEM infotainment and can confirm, they are pretty shit. The screen is hard to get it to register a tap, the corners are dead, and the UI is very 2013 (It's a 2013 toyota, so I guess more like 2009 UI).

I was intending to argue back 'yes but who started that in Australia' - and on a quick look it appears that was Kia. I know Hyundai and Kia have a crazy amount of engineering overlap, but regardless you are correct.
