The ultimate fallback always is to revert to letting user sign in manually. Installation success doesn't depend on cookies, so that should be just fine.

UberX is essentially Lyft. Do you know if the driver involved was an UberX driver or a professional driver? His car make/model seems to indicate UberX.

What if the cause for the accident was that the driver was responding to a 'ride available' text from Uber? It's not a bad argument to say that Uber requires that drivers pay attention to their cell phone when not in an act

Way to not apologize or really 'fix' the issue. For all users who don't opt out (which they don't say will be default) this vulnerability will still exist and be exploitable. They'll just make it (somewhat) harder.
