It can do tcp/ip, but it's extremely slow. Like 5+ seconds for a character to appear over ssh with a direct connection.

Isn't mpv a more modern and maintained mplayer fork? Mplayer was my go-to for many many years, starting in the early 2000s, but I switched at one point and can't remember why. What do you prefer about mplayer?

I was actually just playing around with distcc for the first time last night. Compiling ungoogled chromium normally takes my desktop about 12 hours, and using distcc to share the load with my laptop (with a gigabit connection to my desktop)
