From working with many ML researchers, it's not speculation. Some aren't very proud, but if you want to get ahead and stay competitive, you have to publish your un-replicable results. The results aren't usually completely fak

The bulk of industry ML work isn't actually suited to ML phds without engineering skills. I work in FAANG and this is a huge problem where the ML phds have poor communication with skilled engineers and a lack of engineering experience.
