Seeing that mypy is under github.com/python/, you can easily argue that it is in fact the standard tool for type-checking python code.

It's actually not likely at ALL. Guido van Rossum said[0] on multiple occasions that it's un-pythonic and it won't happen. Edit: I didn't see shakna's comment. [0] http://neopythonic.blogspot.de/2009

Agree,It's a big turn off for me personally to be honest. And I imagine institues in countries which were once colonized wouldn't be excited about using such a product/project due to fair historical reasons.
