This is excellent advice. But would it give an edge if you are starting a product on the lines of http://basecamphq.com/ ? 37 signals does have customers outside the US but I suppose its a small figure.

I use this script for similar purpose - http://www.inetbase.com/scripts/ddos/install.ddos The advantage of this script is that it directly monitors the IPs using netstat so one could stop bots from hammering things other than your webser

Not to mention the size. A HTML + CSS + JS (jQuery) implementation of a simple component such as a menu would end up being ~50KB. In flash it turns out to be less than 1KB.
