Not sure about VLC, but I’ve a Plex server locally and Apple TV app works fine for streaming from the server.

Biggest wins for me when recently switching from a Firestick to an Apple TV is how much faster it’s been to use and the lack of crud. Seems the Firestick has some heavy subsidises they make up for with activities like this post.

Looking at the network requests when you hit that button it seems to be hitting a lot of tracking providers opt out API endpoints. Which is good I suppose, though better not to even include their scripts until you agree to it

I think the point is that this is a step towards consumers purchasing headphones with a digital usb/lightning/whatever connector, not to carry around an adaptor. I guess we'll see in time whether the idea takes off.
