I’m not familiar with tor, but isn’t it possible to run it on a pi and route traffic through it? This way nothing would leak. Are there any disadvantages of that?

I don’t see why you say US, it’s the same in any country. Nobody in their right mind is going to quit their job over this during a pandemic, when it’s already so hard to find a job. I imagine ethics jobs are not in high demand.

UX is quite good as long as you don’t have to edit the settings. Most buggy sites work on it, which is no longer true for Firefox. It’s also very stable and secure. But it does get slower and slower with each update.
