I assume we can all do the arithmetic. In the market, stocks will move based on price increases, since cost inputs are assumed to not move, or rarely move - COVID being an exception to the rule.

In court, you bring in experts (usually professors from reputable universities) to state best practices. Judges don't act as experts in a trial.

Stealing disks does happen, especially on-premise, which is where these policies originated. Also, sometimes there are mistakes with decommissioning old drives, and you wouldn’t want your data discovered in a landfill somewhere.

Chromium is open source and is adopted by Microsoft via Edge. So if Google stops working on it, I'm sure MS will take up development. I think one standard is better for developers, but maybe not for diversity.
