The '$' being used in variable names I think originates from the word 'string', from when it was necessary to differentiate types of variable in the code. It never related to currency.

I'd like to see Twitter unwind the recent requirement to have an account simply to read linked tweets and threads. This is such a horribly hostile requirement, Twitter should be ashamed of the mockery they are making of the web.
