It's impossible for a layman to know because most people in accredited positions of authority lie without cessation. Identify people you trust on a subject, filter their claims through your own ideas about what is reasonable, and hope

Inflation is value confiscation. It's a tax. It reduces the burden of the greatest debtor (government) at the expense of everybody who holds dollars and produces value. What do I get out of it?

High prices for a product means there is an incentive to produce more of it. Obfuscating the true value of something discourages new production, so California remains stupid.

Sellers have a moral imperative to figure out how much their stuff is worth by charging as much as they can. When people stop buying what they’re selling, we know the product or service isn’t worth it, so the price comes back down.
