I tried using John Wiegley's Ledger, which uses negative numbers. Everything was great about Ledger except for that part - I just couldn't wrap my head around it.

Sounds very useful to me. rsync is my go to tool - I use it to manually maintain versions of my workstation as I find it the most reliable and usable among all options I've tried.

I hear you. In my case I was finally able to get to music late (past 50). I'm so grateful I was around long enough to do that. It does not pay any bills, but it gives me much happiness, even though the guitar playing is subpar.
