They might not even know the answer themselves and have a solution in front of them that they are comparing yours to. Then they just said the first thing that came to their mind rather than that they don't know.

Is it the is/are issue? Maybe they are using it as a mass noun or speaking specifically about the the phrase itself or the idea of data structures. Could stem from a cultural or ESOL reason.

I take commercial to mean lian-li (who made their old cases), cooler aster, antec, etc. Large volume manufacturers. It's probably easier for them to vertically integrate the case into their business than go with a low volume niche manu

I do this as well. I started doing it in college mainly as a citation but I find it helpful to do a similar thing for this reason as well as for any of the less mainstream algorithms or theorems that would provide further information.
