As someone with a similar background to the writer of this post (I did avionics work for NASA before moving into more “traditional” software engineering), this post does a great job at summing up my thoughts on why space-based data centers

I got hired at my current company back in 2022 through their post on a Who’s Hiring post here. Likely never would have heard of them otherwise, but glad I did!

Thanks for sharing this. I had the pleasure to work with Don Eyles in a previous job, he is a brilliant man, didn’t realize he had written a book. I actually didn’t even realize who he was initially when I first met him until another co-wor

Reminds how in one of the Bethesda Fallout games, they needed a subway train car. Solution? Make an NPC with a train car head that runs really fast.

Fun fact: when the Quindar tones were no longer needed, NASA initially removed them. However, it caused confusion in mission control since everyone was used to them, so NASA added them back.

Your argument assumes a just state that will not outlaw things like dissent against the government, being LGBTQ, etc. Plus, having something to hide does not automatically mean you are doing something criminal. I do nothing criminal, but I

For those interested in this topic, the IEEE piece by Gregory Travis linked in this article is a fantastic read.

Figure 2 is great, but I would agree the entire paper is needed if you are implementing raft. There are a few specifics in the paper that you need when implementing it. P.S. love your blog :)

I love this site. When I was learning & implementing raft in my distributed systems course, this page was invaluable. Plus the paper itself is pretty easy to read.

Yeah medical info and HIPAA was the first thing I thought of when I saw this. My company doesn’t deal with medical data but I can’t imagine any company dealing with PII wants to use Zoom now.

Funny how he keeps using the phrase “developers that want to work with us”. Clearly trying to suggest that some don’t (wonder which ones he thinks do not want to work with them /s)

In general I would agree, but the only reason the recordings were made public was because Reddit was straight up lying about the Apollo dev. So the recordings were released to prove that the Apollo dev was right.

Potentially dumb question: when astronomers see a new galaxy, how do they know it’s never been discovered before? Is there some database of known galaxies that they use? Presumably there’s something measurable that they’re using to identify

Why would you recommend 1Password over Bitwarden for less technical folks? Asking because I am about to setup a family plan on Bitwarden for me and my less-technical wife. I already use Bitwarden and have for some time, so seeing if there m

Current OMSCS student here (4 classes down, 6 to go). I'll second this comment, so far I've been impressed with the program. It's definitely rigorous, but I've already learned a lot.

I don’t think that’s an insane setup at all. Losing access to GitHub would be bad for a lot of folks on HN I suspect. My GitHub has 2FA with Yubikeys and I am planning to do something similar to yours with backing up to a personal Gitea ins

This. I’m a backer for their Kickstarter but the lack of PGP is unfortunate. Yes, there are problems with it. But as you said, it’s everywhere. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon, so what’s the harm in supporting it for now?

I’ve used COSMOS with embedded systems on personal projects and it is very easy to learn and get setup. Highly recommend it to folks who are considering it. For anyone interested in using this with Arduino, you can take a look at this blog
