I wonder whether it really would help with just one person. I suspect part of the problem with groups is that the one who proposed a solution will take a social hit if it is rejected. So, with just you, that shouldn't come up.

I agree. I first learned to program in Python and then started learning about other languages with more options enabled. Coming from a Lisp to Python would have felt strange. Maybe worth it to use a nice library or program?

The point of firing her isn't to get rid of a bad worker; it is based on game theory. The firing hurts both MIT and the dean, but it should dissuade people from lying in these kinds of situations.
