Your contacts could still end up messaging the new owner of the number inadvertently if you don't warn them before losing the number or out of band through. It seems WhatsApp doesn't has no warning if such a owner change happened.

I think the big thing will be FOSS solutions. That way the Europeans, Chinese, contrarian Americans, Russian, etc can use the same code and share capital costs without actually having to trust each other.

Speaking for myself, but I would my game saves and config in the cloud if I were using OneDrive. That is however a separate issue from whether those files should be in the hidden appdata or in the visible my documents.
