Basically if you never read a particular block from your volume after you initialize it, AWS never moves it out of S3 into EBS. This can cause bizarrely slow performance for database or other random-read applications when you fire up a volu

The data already gathered would indicate that your suspicion is wrong. Currently the US averages 1 fatality for every 89 million miles driven. Autopilot is at almost twice that with only 1 fatality. So autopilot already fails less often
