Couldn't agree more. The bandwagon effect is something also worth mentioning. Tech stacks and tools these days are branded almost as consumer products and the outcome is poorly designed systems.

why not just use parameter store? https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/systems-manager/parameter-store/ . Plus: don't use credentials directly, use the assume role feature.

I wonder if this is a common feature of leaders rather than a degenerative disease. Very competitive environments make way for sociopaths to get up to the top more frequently than normal people.
