People who want to commit suicide are largely left to their own devices. Unless you're institutionalized, detained, or jailed, you're free to obtain the supplies needed to complete the act painlessly. To me, the stigma of suicide

They're not the same. In the jumper scenario, imminent death was certain whether they jumped or not. This is only true in a small fraction of suicides.

Yes, the approach was, in practice, wrong. Make the backup, get the patch out, then put in the deployment system on the side.
