Does making it free get people out of cars? The right way to study this is a year trial and see how it works. Why would I switch from car to bus if they still run every 30 minutes or more ?

Not collecting even minimal fares means other parts of the system won’t be funded. Cut the price in half or more. But it has value. It does not need to make a profit. Run more frequently ! Biggest complaint of mine.

I've been in a couple "lights out" datacenters and there always seem to be electrical/cooling/backups engineers in and around running regular checks. Which is great! Also services for cleaning public spaces.

Servers run until vendor contracts get terminated. But actual lights? In shared office bldgs it actually depends on the renter's requests to the cleaning service. I've worked many places where the crew would turn the light on

Solving the problem should be what you're looking to do. Learning how to solve the problem with the current tools also helps. edw is right - avoid that "Software Engineer" label. It's a pipe dream of broken promises
