How is this more secure than any other L3 switch with an out of band (or otherwise hardened) management interface? I'm not going to say no one is attacking switches, but that's definitely not where I'd start.

I switched to MacPorts from Fink (RIP). It feels about the same as using pkg on a modern FreeBSD box. Pros compared to Homebrew: doesn't litter symlinks everywhere, behaves the way you expect a package manager to. Cons: Not as cool™,

You can buy a FreeNAS box built by the same company that runs the project on Amazon. A bit pricey, but it's been perfect for me for over a year.

Little Snitch serves this purpose to some extent on OS X. If the malicious hidden script invoked a remote server I'd get a popup asking if I would like to allow it.

If memory serves GMs are normally a one and done thing. It may be buggy and inadvisable (wait for 10.x.1), but the GM normally ships more or less unchanged.

You're really only going after the config files, though. .zpreztorc, and if you don't like some of Sorin's aliases (rm, ls, etc) you can take them out of the utility plugin. I've spent maybe an hour "working"

It's so bizarre to me that people would look at the base install of essentially dotfiles as canonical and unalterable. Fork Prezto and maintain your own version.

The biggest thing that swayed me to stick with (and optimize/customize) Prezto was the fact that most of the systems I work with have zsh, or a relatively modern version of it available in repos. Can't say the same for fish.

Looks like it's just free as in beer for now. Who knows what will happen a few months/years from now when it doesn't have a huge userbase and Microsoft isn't interested in continuing to support it alone.
