Your right, I remember that discussion: I actually use pier solution, with the shellscript (I assigned them to Ctrl-A + Number) I agree that it does not work 'out of the box', but once setup, it works quite nice :)

I personally use: bind-key -n M-1 select-window -t 1 bind-key -n M-2 select-window -t 2 bind-key -n M-3 select-window -t 3 (...) For an IMHO even more convinient ALT+Number to switch directly to the tab in question, just like in firefox.
