Seems like an example of a Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm, mostly used in motion planning. Granted this display seems like the RRT* variant.

I agree that it takes a certain mindset to understand how to read/write code. However, simply offering it as an option in k-12 education doesn't seem like too bad an idea, so long as it is a child's choice to experience programming for the
