you are on the right way if using HAL feels like cheating! i always recommend starting with implementing a UART bare metal, since you will need a UART for debugging / talking with the chip all the time.

recently upgraded from my m1 air to m3 mbp 14 for ports reasons and for having bigger keyboard. but where happy til last day using it. perfomance was absolutely fine for running vim + firefox...

I was working i a company (EMC testing) which decided to build their own "Power over Fiber" solar cells, also in the 500 or 600mW power range. Yes, you can buy such stuff now from boradcom but these are simply too expensive.
