I recommend hiring an independent financial advisor, they probably cost $100-200 per hour in your area. (Banks will do it for free but they will also recommend that you buy garbage.) Ask them about options up front and see what they say.

I prefer an operational definition: a scientist is somebody who does research using the scientific method. But then again, this eliminates a bunch of CS people, since they're mostly doing math and engineering.
